Beef Koftas in a spicy sauce

Beef Koftas in a spicy sauce

Beef Koftas in a spicy sauce

Serves 2

Koftas are a Middle Eastern meatball that are gently spiced and are simple to make.

There are many versions out there but this is my take on this classic dish which is complimented but a simple spicy sauce.

Ingredients

Koftas

250g lean minced Beef

1 clove of garlic

1” grated fresh ginger (or 1 teaspoon of ginger pulp)

2 teaspoons of cumin seeds

1 teaspoon of dried Oregano

½ teaspoon of chilli flakes

Salt and pepper

Spicy sauce

500g Passata

1 red onion

1 red pepper

1 clove of garlic

1” grated fresh ginger (or 1 teaspoon of ginger pulp)

1 teaspoon of cumin seeds

1 teaspoon of ground coriander

1 red chilli

Salt

1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

Method

-          To make the Koftas place all the Kofta ingredients into a bowl and mix well with clean hands until the ingredients are combined.

-          To shape the Koftas take about a tablespoon sized portion and press tightly together,  then roll into a ball. Approx the size of a ping pong ball. Place on a baking sheet and repeat the process until all the mixture is made. This mixture should make about 10 Kofta.

-          Place in the fridge for 20 minutes to chill.

-          To make the sauce slice the onion and pepper and place in a pan with hot oil.

-          Add the crushed garlic and grated ginger and cook on a medium heat for 5 minutes until the onions have softened.

-          Next add the chilli, cumin and ground coriander and mix well. Then pour in the Passata and stir. Season with salt.

-          Place your chilled Koftas into the sauce and cover with a lid. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and cook for 30 minutes.

-          Serve with Basmati rice and a drizzle of natural yoghurt.
